Wonders of the World - The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world which consists of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching along more than 2,600 kilometers, over an area of approximately 344 400 square kilometers. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space loh ... and this is the world's largest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps.
Because of this reef supports the diversity of life finally in 1981 was selected as a World Heritage Site. CNN labeled it as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named this place as an icon of the state of Queensland.
Most of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps monitor and limit the impact of human use, such as fisheries and tourism. Other environmental stresses was also a concern.
The Great Barrier Reef also has long been known and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander, and is an important part of the culture and spirituality of local groups'. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns.
